Dr Nick White holds a mirror so a young child can check their smile after an appointment

Children’s Dentistry Hervey Bay

Good habits for a healthy mouth start when you are a child, so children’s dentistry at White Dental Co. focuses on prevention, education, and fun.

Dental check-ups for children

Just as your child seems never to stop growing, their teeth and mouth also develop rapidly. For this reason, we recommend regular visits to the dentist. Bringing your child to a check-up helps them develop good oral hygiene habits for life.

Our dentist, Dr Nick White, and Oral Health Therapist, Amelia, love working with children and will take the time to make your child feel welcome in our practice.

What kids and parents can expect from White Dental Co.

We love welcoming kids of all ages into our practice. We know that when a child has positive dental care experiences when they are young, they are more likely to enjoy a healthy smile throughout their lifetime.

At their appointment, your child will be:

  • Welcomed by smiling, friendly faces.
  • Treated to some screen time via the televisions on the ceiling above our dental chairs,
  • Involved in conversations about their dental health.

Every child will receive a calico bag filled with a selection of dental products to use at home.

Parents and guardians can expect to be

  • welcomed into the practice and acknowledged as experts in caring for their child’s oral health
  • asked about their child’s medical and dental history
  • kept well-informed about their children’s dental health
  • fully informed about the dental services that may be recommended for their child, including fees, benefits, potential downsides, and options.
  • shown how to support their children to learn how to care for their oral health (skills like tooth brushing, choosing tooth-friendly foods, and other ways to prevent dental disease).

Dr Nick will provide information about

  • teething
  • brushing technique
  • bite (advice on orthodontics)
  • gums and cheeks
  • habits such as thumb-sucking
  • risk of decay and how to prevent it
  • prevention of trauma to your child’s mouth and
  • nutritional advice.

Some services we offer for children’s dental care include

Fissure sealants

Fissure sealants are a thin layer of tooth-coloured filling used to seal the biting surface of the teeth. The deep cracks and folds are the areas most at risk of decay. There is a decreased risk of decay by filling these up.

Fluoride treatments

White Dental Co. encourages fluoride application as a regular treatment for children. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral crucial in preventing tooth decay. Young teeth are more able to absorb mineral content, meaning it’s an excellent time for this treatment.

Mouthguards

White Dental Co. encourages the use of mouthguards, especially for contact sports. In particular, we recommend custom-made professional mouthguards. They have superior retention, comfort and security for the teeth.

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule

White Dental Co. offers no gap (free out of pocket) dental care to eligible patients through the Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS).

The CDBS is a Medicare-funded scheme offered to your child if they are

  • between 2-17 years old,
  • eligible for Medicare and
  • are receiving a payment from Services Australia.

It covers up to $1052 over two calendar years for essential dental services, including regular check ups, professional cleaning, and fillings. We are happy to answer any questions relating to the scheme. Alternatively, more information is available at Services Australia CDBS.

Frequently Asked Questions about dentistry for kids

What age should a child first visit the dentist?

Your child’s first dental visit is an important milestone. We love to see children when their baby teeth are first visible or from 12 months old, whichever is earliest. This timeline is recommended by the Australian Dental Association.

How often should a child come in for dental visits?

The frequency of your child’s checkups will depend on their current dental health status. Most children visit us at least once a year, and some visit more frequently if they need additional support to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy.

We’re here to support your children to enjoy lifelong dental health!

Our friendly team welcomes children of all ages.
