Fissure Sealants Hervey Bay

Placing fissure sealants is a cost-effective way to prevent at-risk teeth from developing decay.

Why are some teeth more at risk of decay?

Teeth vary in shape, size, and smoothness. The chewing surfaces of molars and premolars (back teeth) can be relatively smooth or may be covered in deep grooves or fissures. The presence or absence of deep fissures is determined by genetics.

The deep grooves are the areas of a tooth that are most at risk of decay. Plaque bacteria can grow in these narrow spaces, out of reach of toothbrush bristles. Decay is almost inevitable, even when the diet is relatively free of sugar.

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are a thin layer of tooth-coloured filling used to seal the biting surface to protect the tooth from cavities. It’s a preventive dentistry procedure almost exclusively done in children. It is rare for adult teeth to require this treatment.

How are fissure sealants placed?

Unlike regular fillings, there is no drilling required to place a fissure sealant. There is, therefore, no need to numb the area with a local anaesthetic. Several sealants can be placed in a single appointment.

The tooth is washed, and the enamel is treated to help the sealant adhere. The fissure is kept dry for the few minutes it takes to place and set the sealant.

Our dentist, Dr Nick White, has a great rapport with our young patients and will explain the treatment to them in child-friendly terms. As a result, we find that even a young child will manage the procedure well.

What happens after the fissure sealant appointment?

The sealant sets straight away, so the child can eat and drink immediately after their appointment.

Dr Nick will ensure that every child and their parents leave with some pointers about effective home care. Fissure sealants significantly reduce the risk of cavities in combination with attention to brushing, flossing, and a healthy diet.

We expect that fissure sealants will remain in place for many years. Dr Nick will review them at every check-up appointment.
