Dental implants for the long-term replacement of missing teeth
Dental implants have become the gold standard treatment in dentistry for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants are strong, aesthetically pleasing, and long-lasting restorations.
Dental implants are sometimes called “tooth implants”.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a synthetic alternative to a natural tooth. It consists of two sections:
- a base that provides a long-lasting, solid, and well-anchored “artificial root.”
- an upper structure crafted by skilled technicians to look like the tooth or teeth it replaces.
The implant base
The base of the implant looks like a screw. In a surgical procedure, it is embedded in the bone where the missing tooth once stood. The screw is made of titanium, the same material used for plating and pins to heal bones. As the jawbone heals after surgery, the bone fuses to the titanium surface, creating a strong, harmonious connection.
Implant teeth
The upper structure is attached once the implant base is well-connected to the bone.
The upper structure might be
- a single crown
- two or more teeth linked together (a bridge)
- a partial or full denture.
How much does a dental implant cost?
Our fee for dental implants varies from case to case. Our dentist, Dr Nick White, will explain the fees, payment structure, and alternatives.
Treatment involving dental implants typically attracts a higher fee than the other options. This fee reflects
- the quality of the implant components that Dr Nick uses in every case
- the quantity of components required. Cases with multiple implants will attract higher fees
- that each course of treatment requires multiple long appointments
- the costs associated with setting up our practice to ensure sterile conditions for each step of treatment
- the involvement of highly skilled Australian dental technicians.
Dr Nick continues investing in his training to deliver long-lasting results for each patient.
In complex cases, Dr Nick will refer the patient to a specialist, which typically attracts higher fees.
How many dental implants are needed for each treatment?
Dr Nick will place a single implant if a single tooth is missing.
He will recommend two or more implants to support a bridge or denture if several teeth are missing.
Advantages of implant-supported tooth replacements
- Dental implants are a long-lasting treatment option
- The replacement crowns, bridges, and dentures are held firmly in place, just like natural teeth. Patients can eat, speak, sneeze, and laugh with confidence.
- They are similar in size, shape, and texture to natural teeth. Patients tell us they feel very comfortable and are easy to keep clean
- Implant teeth are made of porcelain to blend into each patient’s smile.
Disadvantages of implant-supported tooth replacements
- The placement of each implant is a surgical procedure. Every surgical procedure has inherent risks that patients must carefully consider before treatment.
- There may be discomfort during the healing phase.
- They cost more than alternative treatments (but are likely to last much longer)
- Some health conditions prevent their use.
Alternatives to dental implants
Missing teeth can also be replaced with these dental services
- dentures
- dental bridges.
